Learn from thy predecessors.

As I was telling my neighbor, the current porch is a lesson in itself. I can see what worked in its construction and what failed. Joist hangers and actually attaching the ledger board to the house will go a long way to preventing similar future failure. The stringers are well attached at the top but they don’t sit fully on the sidewalk at the bottom so they’ve cracked. Depending on my distances, I’ll lengthen them a bit or extend the sidewalk for full support of the bottom. Plus there’s also only three of them–I’ll be using four and the stairs will be slightly narrower. Keeping the spacing 16″ or less.

The new porch should take much less maintenance and last a lot longer. It better.
